Media Coverage of the Crisis in Japan
Like me, you all probably have been watching a lot of media coverage since the earthquake.
Countless replays of the tsunami and constant updates of the nuclear crisis in Fukushima.
While the domestic coverage is informing and sometimes daunting, the international coverage by commercial networks is very sensational and leaves the viewer terrified and even a little traumatised.
Early foreign reports stated that the earthquake and nuclear plant was “just north of Tokyo”, not being clear of it’s exact location.
This prompted many people overseas to panic and call family and friends living in Tokyo.
Even after reassuring them that Tokyo was fine, people were still bombarded with sensational news that Tokyo was in a much worse situation than what was actually happening.
Don’t get me wrong, it IS absolutely terrible what has and is happening in Japan, but some media agencies like to embellish the truth.
