What’s Boxing Day?
The 26th of December in Australia, the UK, New Zealand, Canada, and many other Commonwealth nations, is Boxing Day.
So, what is Boxing Day? It’s a public holiday or bank holiday that has unclear origins.
One theory is that during the Middle Ages, during the feast of St Stephen, people left offerings in boxes in front of churches.
Another is that on December 26th people would give boxes of money or presents for tradesmen to say “thank you” for their services.
Another theory is that to enjoy their Christmas wealthy people would have their servants work on Christmas Day.
Then the next day (26th) give them the day off to spend time with their families, as well as giving them boxes with gifts and leftover food inside.
These days Boxing Day is a major bargain shopping day.
Last December I spent the day with my family in Brisbane.
Again having a big lunch and eating too much!
