Natural Disasters in Australia – Cyclone Yasi
Last month cyclone Yasi ripped through north Queensland Australia, destroying homes, businesses and obliterating crops of bananas and sugar cane.
The area was in the middle of recovering after the floods that ravaged north Queensland only a month before when the cyclone hit.
The floods had caused billions of dollars of damage and Yasi added onto that.
As in most western countries cyclones (in Australia and surrounding countries) and hurricanes (in North America) are given names.
Unlike in northern Asian countries which give typhoons names.
Yasi will be remembered as one of Australia’s most devastating cyclones, surpassing Larry (2006) and Tracy (1974).
Names seem to give the disaster a more personal affect, like an individual force that’s unstoppable.
